Stu’s Story: A Disabled Pigeon’s Journey to Healing
In October 2024, a severely disabled pigeon was discovered on a road in Hawaii. The tiny bird was terrified and would panic whenever anyone approached her. Despite most pigeon rehabilitation experts recommending euthanasia due to her extensive disabilities, her finder refused to give up hope.
Then something remarkable happened. As if a switch had been flipped, the little pigeon seemed to realize that these people were trying to help her. Her entire demeanor transformed, and we named her Stu.
Stu’s care became a shared responsibility between two dedicated caregivers, Sherilyn and Mokai. What follows is Stu’s story in Sherilyn’s own words.
Understanding Stu’s Condition
We believe Stu has a spinal injury that causes both legs to stick straight back without the ability to bend. While her toes can curl with manual assistance, her mobility is severely limited. Her left wing functions normally, but her right wing has very restricted movement and curls slightly under her body. Her tail also curves to the right, and she can only slowly turn her head rightward to preen.
When left alone, Stu rolls onto her back. Despite our attempts to prop her up with various supports, she wriggles backward to defecate and then cannot return to an upright position. She fits perfectly in the palm of my hand, and while I often carry her around, this isn’t always practical.
Having worked with many disabled birds, I had never encountered one with such severe deformities as little Stu. I reached out to Bev’s Bird Boutique and ordered both their Flyper Super Sling and Flyper Heavenly Hammock to see if either might help.
A Breakthrough in Mobility
The results were incredible! Stu showed a contentment and happiness I had never seen in her before. She enjoys the gentle swaying motion of the sling, and while her legs remain straight and unbendable, she can kick with them and push herself forward slightly.
Following a suggestion from Bev’s Bird Boutique to seek chiropractic care, I searched for an avian chiropractor in Hawaii. When I couldn’t find one, I contacted a horse chiropractor who graciously agreed to see Stu. During the assessment, Stu was remarkably relaxed, and the doctor was impressed by the sling’s design, calling it ingenious for relieving pressure on Stu’s spine. Stu has a follow-up appointment scheduled for next week.
Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures
Stu has discovered entertainment in playing peek-a-boo around the sling ties. The support and freedom the sling provides have awakened her desire to walk and move—something she couldn’t safely do before.
After extensive use of both mobility aids, I’ve found value in each for different reasons:
The Hammock provides stable support and portability. I can easily attach it inside a milk crate for transport, and I’m planning to try it in a pet stroller so Stu can enjoy walks in the sunshine.
The Sling offers steady support while allowing more movement and wing-flapping, which suits Stu’s naturally active personality. She can push with her hips and rock herself gently. The soft fabric doesn’t irritate her feathers, even when she leans forward trying to walk or turns her body. It’s simple to get her in and out, and her happiness has increased dramatically.
An Unexpected Recovery
One week later, we witnessed something miraculous. At her second chiropractic visit, Stu achieved what we thought was impossible—she turned her head to the left for the first time since being found in October 2024!
That evening, she spent hours moving her legs while suspended in the sling. According to the chiropractor, Stu is actively exercising and strengthening her leg muscles. The transformation is remarkable—she is absolutely content.
